Surfer SEO alternatives

Surfer does two jobs, so pick the half you want to replace. For the content editor: NeuronWriter from $23 a month, Frase from $39 billed yearly, Clearscope from $129. For the AI tracker: Placton from $59, which adds Claude and Grok but has no SEO score.

What Placton does not replace. It has no SEO content score, no Google rank tracking, no WordPress or Google Docs connection and no API. If that is why you pay for Surfer, pick NeuronWriter, Frase or Clearscope and stop reading here.

Where Surfer beats us. Its tracker-only plan gives about 7,500 AI answers a month for $95. Placton Growth gives about 5,400 for $129. And if your writers use its editor every day, you may be better off staying.

  • AI tracker with a writer

    PlactonOur product

    $59/ month

    $602 billed yearly ($50.17 a month). Growth is $129 and Scale $299.

Best for: Teams that want to know what the AIs say about them, Claude and Grok included, and want a first draft for the questions where they are missing.

Weak point: No SEO content score, no Google rank tracking, no WordPress or Google Docs connection, no API, no data exports. Claude, Perplexity and Grok run weekly and through their APIs. It is also new: live since October 2026, with no public reviews yet.

    Replaces
Surfer’s AI tracker, and only part of its editor: it writes a draft, with no live score for Google.
    Includes
20 prompts, 5 written texts a month, 2 team members. Growth: 75 prompts, 15 texts. Scale: 250 prompts, 40 texts.
    AI tracked
ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Perplexity and Grok. ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews daily*, the other three weekly.
    Free trial
7 days, no card, up to 10 prompts and 1 text. Nothing is charged when it ends.

    Every Placton plan and price

  • Content editor

    NeuronWriter

    $23/ month

    Then $45, $69, $93 and $117. Yearly billing gives 2 months free.

Best for: Solo writers and small teams who want an editor like Surfer’s for much less. It is the direct cheap swap.

Weak point: AI tracking is a small add-on, and it covers neither Claude nor Grok.

    Replaces
    The editor
    Includes
    25 to 150 documents, 2 to 50 projects, 5 to 20 AI questions
    AI tracked

  • Editor and AI tracking

    Frase

    $39/ month

Billed yearly. $49 appears struck through, which looks like the monthly price. Larger plans: $103 and $239 billed yearly.

Best for: Anyone who wants both jobs in one cheap plan. At this price it is our most direct rival, and it publishes to your CMS, which Placton does not.

Weak point: The entry plan tracks two AIs. The full list needs Scale or Enterprise.

    Replaces
The editor and, at small scale, the tracker
    Includes
10, 40 or 100 articles, 20, 50 or 75 prompts; publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity and Wix

  • Content editor for teams

    Clearscope

    $129/ month

    Then $399, and custom.

Best for: Editorial teams with many writers, since users are unlimited.

Weak point: You get 50 queries for $129, and tracking stops at ChatGPT and Gemini.

    Replaces
    The editor
    Includes
50 or 300 queries, 20 drafts, unlimited users

  • SEO suite with an editor

    SE Ranking

    €109/ month

In euros, as the page showed us. Core reads €109 and €87.20, Growth €235 and €188; the labels are unclear and we take the lower figure as yearly.

Best for: Replacing Surfer and a separate rank tracker in one move. Surfer itself says it is not a generic rank tracker.

Weak point: A whole suite to pay for if you only want the editor, and we could only read its prices in euros.

    Replaces
The editor, plus your rank tracker
    Includes
A full suite with a content editor, 25 or 50 articles, 25 daily prompts
    AI tracked
    5 engines

  • On-page optimizer

    Page Optimizer Pro

    $40/ month

    Then $72 and $143.

Best for: Technical SEOs who care more about page signals than about a writing tool.

Weak point: Plans are counted in credits, with 20 on the entry plan, and Grok is not on its list.

    Replaces
The page-level part of the editor
    Includes
    20, 50 or 120 credits
    AI tracked
ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity
    Free trial
A trial without registration, length not stated; refund within 7 days

  • AI tracker only

    Peec AI

    $95/ month

    Then $245 and $495.

Best for: Teams that only want to measure, every day, with a seat for everyone.

Weak point: There is no editor at all, and Claude and Grok need Enterprise.

    Replaces
    The tracker
    Includes
50, 150 or 350 prompts, daily, unlimited users
    AI tracked

* On paid plans. ChatGPT is read on chatgpt.com in every country Placton tracks except Venezuela and Puerto Rico, where it is asked weekly through its API.

Others you will see named. MarketMuse came up in all five AI answers below, but it publishes no price beyond a Free plan with 10 queries, and its pricing page does not mention AI search. Content Harmony runs from $50 to $799 with unlimited users and suits briefs for outside writers, with no AI tracking. We left Scalenut out because the prices we read on its page conflict. If you already pay for Semrush, see how its AI toolkit compares. Comparing trackers? Profound came up in all five tracker answers below, and here is how it compares.

We asked five AIs for the best Surfer SEO alternatives

Of the 14 alternatives pages we read, none shows what the AIs actually answer. So on we asked ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Perplexity and Grok with Placton’s own engine: once about Surfer SEO and once about its AI Tracker.

  • 4

tools named by all five on the editor question: Frase, Clearscope, NeuronWriter and MarketMuse.

  • 0

of those four came up when we asked about the tracker. There, Profound and SE Ranking were the ones named by all five.

  • 4 of 5

AIs cited the same page on the tracker question: Rankability’s own list, which puts Rankability first.

The two halves really are two markets. Ask about Surfer SEO and you get editors. Ask about its AI Tracker and you get a different list. On the editor question, only Claude and Grok brought up any tracker at all. That is why a single “top 7” does not help you.

Sources barely overlap. Across the five editor answers the AIs cited 30 sites, and only 2 of them (Frase and Zutrix) were cited by more than one AI. The one page that stands out is on the tracker side: Rankability’s list, cited by ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Grok.

Read it as a snapshot. This is one reading per AI, on one day, from the United States, in English. Answers change between runs, which is why Placton repeats each question and publishes how it handles the margin of error.

How each AI was asked

  • ChatGPT: read on chatgpt.com, logged out, with web search on, with gpt-6.
  • Google AI Overviews: the AI Overview Google shows above its results.
  • Claude: asked through its API with live web search, with claude-haiku-5-5.
  • Perplexity: asked through its API, which always searches, with sonar.
  • Grok: asked through its API with live web search, with grok-4.3.

The question went in as written, with no brand and no instructions. Names were read with the same reader the product uses and then checked by hand: one name per vendor, in the order the answer presents them, without Surfer or its own Keyword Surfer extension. Google’s answer wrote “Athena”, which we counted as AthenaHQ, and “Peak AI” and “Goody AI”, which we left as written. Perplexity listed Semrush, Ahrefs and SE Ranking under classic rank tracking, not AI tracking.

What Surfer sells as of November 2026

Surfer SEO and Surfer AI are the same company: the old pricing address now redirects to a new one on a .ai domain. It has been around since 2018, counts more than 150,000 users and now calls itself an AI visibility platform. It sells two products.

  • The content editor

Live guidance on structure, words and terms, built from Google’s top 10 and pages AI cites, with a Content Score on top. Higher plans add internal linking, cannibalization checks, templates and voices. Surfer also says what it is not: a link index, a technical crawler, a Core Web Vitals tool or a generic rank tracker.

  • The AI Tracker

Mention rate, average position, visibility, share against rivals, tone, cited sources, fan-out and a Mention Gap, on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews and Gemini. By its own account it reads each AI’s real interface. Since October 5, 2026 it also recommends actions and lets you buy mentions, with PRNEWS and 4media as its newest providers.

AI Search Analytics also comes with 100 prompts at $185 ($158 billed yearly) and 200 at $365 ($308). Peace of Mind’s unlimited documents have a fair-use cap of 500 a month. VAT is extra in the EU and the UK. Source: Surfer’s pricing page and help center, read .

  • If a list quotes Essential or Scale, it is out of date. Those plans are gone, and since May 18, 2026 a document counts the same whether you write it by hand or with AI. Of the 14 alternatives pages we read on , 6 still quote the old plans and 8 never mention the tracker.
  • Documents on yearly billing arrive in one block. 120 and 360 a year average 10 and 30 a month, and unused ones do not roll over.
  • The jump to track more than ChatGPT is steep. Standard tracks ChatGPT alone, weekly. To keep the editor and track all five you go from $119 to $219 a month. The other route is the tracker-only plan at $95, with no editor.
  • Claude is on the menu but not on the plans. Its menu and homepage mention Claude. Its plan table does not, and its AI instructions page says not to state that the tracker monitors it. Grok does not come up at all.

On answers per dollar, Surfer wins. Its tracker-only plan asks 50 prompts on five AIs every day: about 7,500 answers a month, at around 1.3 cents each. Placton asks two AIs daily and three weekly: 5,400 answers on Growth at 2.4 cents, and 18,000 on Scale at 1.7. Per prompt it flips from 75 prompts up ($1.72 against $1.90), because of those weekly AIs. These counts are our own math. Placton costs less to start, includes a writer and covers Claude and Grok; if none of that matters to you, buy Surfer’s plan.

Surfer vs Placton, row by row

Count them: Surfer wins 12 rows, Placton 3, and 5 depend on what you need. Our three are the reason Placton exists: Claude and Grok, a lower entry price and a trial with no card.

What Placton does when the AIs leave you out

The reading above is the start of the work, not the end. These are the three parts of the dashboard that pick it up, shown on the same questions.

Where you are missing

Every question against every AI

It lists each question you track next to each AI, starting with those where no AI names or cites you. Red means no answer brings you up, orange means under half, green means half or more.

Click a count to read those answers, see who shows up instead, and start a text for that question from the same row.

Real data: this view for Frase on the two questions on this page, one reading each, November 2, 2026.

Improvements

A short list of tasks, question by question

Each week you get 3 tasks on Starter, 5 on Growth and 8 on Scale. The code picks each one from a closed list of 17 actions and shows the pages that decide that question, whether each page names you or your rival, and how solid the advice is: strong evidence, medium evidence or a bet.

Then it re-reads those pages every week to check whether it happened. What to expect: a few points over 8 weeks in answers that search, and little or nothing in closed lists. Placton never sends anything for you.

Example task, drawn by hand to show the format. The pages are real: cited in the tracker answers above and read on November 2, 2026.

Writer

A first draft for that question

Pick a question and ask for an article or a ranking. The Writer reads what the AIs answered, what they cite and what they search in the background, plus the top of Google and your own site. What only you know stays as a marked gap: it does not invent figures, customers or opinions. In a ranking your brand goes first, with a visible notice that you publish it.

It takes 1 or 2 minutes. You edit it in place, then copy it or export it to HTML, Markdown or Word. Plans include 5, 15 or 40 texts a month, and the trial 1. It is not Surfer’s editor: there is no term guidance or live SEO score, and publishing a text does not guarantee they name you.

Example data: the draft is written to show the format, and the marked gap is what you fill in.

Is Surfer SEO any good?

The editor has real fans. The evidence that the score moves rankings is thin, and that goes for every tool in this category.

What the score is. The Content Score adds an SEO Score and an AI Search Score. Under 33 is insufficient, 33 to 66 partial, above 66 ready. Surfer’s own advice is to sit 10 to 20 points above your rivals, not to chase 100, and it notes that the AI Search Score does not look at competitors yet.

What Surfer’s study found. Its Content Score study, updated September 9, 2026, covers 10,000 queries and the top 100 results: a Spearman correlation of 0.28 between score and position, from 0.19 to about 0.30 depending on intent. Squared, that is roughly 8% of the variation by our rough math. It comes from the maker, and it is a correlation, not an experiment.

What Ahrefs found. Its 2025 study of 20 keywords and five tools found weak correlations across the board, with Surfer among the very weak. Ahrefs sells one of the five, which came out among the best. We have found no controlled experiment on any of them.

What buyers say. On Trustpilot (opens in a new tab) Surfer held 4.2 out of 5 from 223 reviews on , 39 of them in the last 12 months. The editor gets the most praise, for live guidance and for briefing outside writers. The complaints are about prices at renewal, charges after cancelling and high scores with no rise in rankings. Those are individual accounts we did not verify.

How to leave Surfer without losing your work

Nothing here is hard, but the order matters, because on yearly billing the money is already gone.

  1. Find your renewal date first

You turn off renewal in Billing and keep access until the paid period ends. On yearly billing you paid upfront, so the cheapest moment to move is close to that date.

  2. Save what you want before it ends

Copy or export finished documents and write down your guidelines. Unused documents do not roll over, and we did not check which plans include Data Export, so look at yours. If you are still on the trial, cancelling expires the account and you lose what you saved.

  3. Try the new editor on pages you know

Run two or three of your own pages through it and compare the guidance. Frase gives 7 days without a card, SE Ranking 14 days without a card, and NeuronWriter 7 days once you register. Keep Surfer open while you do it.

  4. Moving the tracker? Start the history again

Placton cannot import another tool’s history, so copy your questions and competitors by hand and run both for a week. Gemini and AI Mode have no equivalent in Placton, so keep that in mind if you watch them.

When to stay with Surfer

For a lot of teams the right alternative is none of the above. Stay if:

Your writers open the editor every day

Live term guidance is what its buyers praise most, and Placton has none. Changing a process that works costs more than the price difference.

You want the most AI answers per dollar

AI Search Analytics gives about 7,500 answers a month for $95, around 1.3 cents each. Placton Growth gives about 5,400 for $129, around 2.4 cents.

You watch Gemini or Google AI Mode

Surfer tracks both, and Placton tracks neither. If you do not need Claude or Grok, you lose nothing by staying.

You want every AI refreshed daily

Surfer refreshes its five every day on its larger plans. Placton does that for ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews and asks the other three weekly.

You publish from WordPress or need an API

Standard connects WordPress and Google Docs, and Peace of Mind adds an API and Zapier. Placton hands you a text to copy, or to export to HTML, Markdown or Word.

You want a vendor with a long record

Surfer has been around since 2018, with reviews on three sites. Placton went live in October 2026 and has no public reviews yet.

Questions about Surfer SEO alternatives

About Placton itself? Read the full FAQs or see every plan and price.

What is the best Surfer SEO alternative?

It depends on which half you are replacing. For the editor on a budget, NeuronWriter at $23 a month. For the editor plus AI tracking in one plan, Frase from $39 billed yearly. For a team of writers, Clearscope at $129. To track Claude and Grok, which Surfer does not, Placton from $59, which has no SEO score. Prices read on November 2, 2026.

What are some free alternatives to Surfer SEO?

None of the tools we read gives you a full editor free for good. The closest are MarketMuse’s Free plan, with 10 queries, and Content Harmony’s $10 trial with 10 credits. For a trial with no card, Frase gives 7 days and SE Ranking 14. If what you want is to see what AI can read on your site, Placton’s free audit needs no account.

Is there a free version of Surfer SEO?

No, there is no free plan. New accounts get 7 days of Pro, with payment details at the start, and it turns into a paid plan unless you cancel. Surfer does offer some free tools: the Keyword Surfer extension, an AI detector, a humanizer, Surfer Pulse and a visibility audit.

Is Surfer SEO any good?

The editor is what its buyers praise most. On Trustpilot it held 4.2 out of 5 from 223 reviews on November 2, 2026, with complaints about renewal prices, charges after cancelling and scores that did not lift rankings. Surfer’s own study puts the correlation between Content Score and position at 0.28, which is weak. We have not used the app, because the trial asks for payment details.

Is SEO dead now with AI?

No. Google AI Overviews lean on pages Google has indexed, and ChatGPT, Perplexity and Grok search the web before they answer, so pages that rank still feed AI answers. What changed is that you now have a second place to check: what those answers say about you.

Do you still need SEO with a GEO tool?

Is Surfer AI the same as Surfer SEO?

Yes. The old Surfer SEO pricing address redirects to a new one on a .ai domain, and the help center still carries the old name. Any page that calls them two tools is out of date.

Does Surfer track Claude or Grok?

Not in its tracker. Its plan table lists ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews and Gemini, and its AI instructions page says not to state that the tracker monitors Claude, even though its menu mentions Claude. Claude appears only as an MCP client, and Grok appears nowhere. Placton asks both weekly on every plan.

What is the cheapest Surfer SEO alternative?

For the editor, NeuronWriter at $23 a month. For AI tracking alone, Otterly.AI Lite starts at $29 (checked October 24, 2026). Placton starts at $59 and includes Claude and Grok.

More plans under $100 a month

Which Surfer alternative suits agencies?

On price per client, Placton’s Agency plan is $15 per client plus prompts: $155 a month for 5 clients and 50 prompts, with no white label or combined dashboard. For unlimited users, Clearscope at $129 tracks only ChatGPT and Gemini, and Peec AI at $95 has no editor. Surfer Pro at $219 gives 5 workspaces and keeps the editor.

How Placton works for agencies

Who are Surfer SEO’s main competitors?

In editors, Frase, Clearscope, NeuronWriter and MarketMuse: all five AIs we asked named those four. In suites, Semrush, SE Ranking and Ahrefs. In AI tracking, Profound, Peec AI and Otterly.AI came up most, and Placton competes there too, though no AI named it when we asked.

Did you test these tools yourselves?

No. We read each maker’s pricing page and Surfer’s help center on November 2, 2026, and we asked the five AIs with Placton’s own engine. We did not use Surfer’s app, and we could not read Reddit, G2 or Capterra, where the frankest buyers are. Prices change, so check the official page before you decide.
