The 18 checks in our GEO audit tool

Grouped as in your report, with the exact test behind each result. A pass scores 1, a warning half and a fail 0; the score is the average out of 100.

AI access5 checks · Can AI crawlers reach and read the site?

  • robots.txt file

Test: A robots.txt answers at the root of the site.

Why it matters: It is the first file a crawler asks for: your rules and the address of your sitemap.

  • AI crawlers allowed

Test: GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended may reach the homepage. One or two blocked is a warning, three or more a fail.

Why it matters: A blocked crawler cannot read your pages for its AI. The AI crawler checker shows more crawlers and the exact line.

  • XML sitemap

Test: A valid sitemap at the address robots.txt gives, or at /sitemap.xml.

Why it matters: It lists the pages you want found, including those few other pages link to.

  • llms.txt file

Test: A text file at /llms.txt with real content, not a web page.

Why it matters: A short summary and index written for language models; a proposal, not a requirement. The llms.txt checker tests its format.

  • Content visible without JavaScript

Test: A pass with 300 words or more in the HTML the server sends; a warning from 120.

Why it matters: Many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript, so text that only appears after scripts run is invisible to them.

Content5 checks · Does the page say clearly what you do?

  • Descriptive title

Test: A title between 10 and 65 characters.

Why it matters: It is the first summary of the page that any search engine or AI tool reads.

  • Meta description

Test: A description between 50 and 170 characters.

Why it matters: A ready-made summary of your offer that tools can reuse as it is.

  • One main heading (H1)

Test: Exactly one H1 on the homepage.

Why it matters: One clear heading tells a reader, human or not, what the page is about.

  • Frequently asked questions

Test: A pass with FAQPage markup; a warning when there are visible FAQs without it.

Why it matters: A question with a direct answer matches the way people ask AI assistants.

  • Images with alt text

Test: A pass when 80% of images have alt text; a warning from 40%.

Why it matters: Alt text is the only part of an image most crawlers can read.

Technical5 checks · Will the page load, and is it the version you want cited?

  • Secure connection (HTTPS)

Test: The homepage is served over https.

Why it matters: It is the baseline for a site you want people, and the tools they use, to trust.

  • Fast response

Test: A pass under 1.5 seconds; a warning under 3.5.

Why it matters: Crawlers work against time limits, so a slow page may be skipped or cut short.

  • Indexable page

Test: No “noindex” in the meta robots tag.

Why it matters: noindex keeps the page out of search, and AI search tools find pages through search.

  • Canonical URL

Test: A <link rel="canonical"> tag on the homepage.

Why it matters: It says which version of the page is the real one, so citations are not split between copies.

  • Declared language

Test: A lang attribute on the <html> tag.

Why it matters: It helps tools match the page with questions asked in that language.

Structured data3 checks · Can a machine tell who is behind the site?

  • Structured data (JSON-LD)

Test: At least one JSON-LD block.

Why it matters: schema.org data states facts such as who, what, where and how much, instead of leaving them to interpretation.

  • Organization profile

Test: An Organization or LocalBusiness type in the JSON-LD.

Why it matters: It ties your name, logo, address and social profiles together as one entity.

  • Open Graph tags

    Test: og:title and og:description; only og:title is a warning.

Why it matters: They set the title and summary shown when the page is shared or previewed.

What an AI SEO audit adds to a classic one

A classic SEO audit looks at

  • Rankings and keyword targeting
  • Backlinks and authority
  • Crawl errors and broken links across the site
  • Core Web Vitals and page speed

An AI SEO audit adds

  • Each AI crawler in robots.txt, not only Googlebot
  • An llms.txt summary for language models
  • How much text is in the HTML before JavaScript runs
  • Direct answers and FAQ markup
  • Entity data: who the business is, in schema.org

What this audit does not do

  • It reads the homepage, robots.txt, the sitemap and llms.txt, not every page of the site.
  • It does not look at backlinks, rankings or traffic.
  • It does not ask any AI what it says about you.
  • The score describes the site today; it is not a forecast of AI visibility.

Keep your SEO audit: AI search tools find most pages through regular search, so the classic checks still count. The AI checks cover what they miss.

Beyond the AI readiness audit: what AI says about you

This is your site. Now see what the AIs actually say about you.

A perfect score means AI assistants can read you. It does not tell you whether they recommend you when a customer asks. Placton sends the questions your customers ask to ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Perplexity and Grok, and shows:

  • Whether each answer names your brand or cites your site
  • Your position and the tone of each mention
  • Which competitors appear instead of you
  • Every page the AI cites, yours or not

GEO audit FAQ

About Placton itself? Read the full FAQs or see every plan and price.

What is a GEO audit?

A review of a website for generative engine optimization: whether AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity can reach it, read it and tell who is behind it. Placton’s runs 18 checks on the homepage, robots.txt, the sitemap and llms.txt.

Is the GEO audit really free?

Yes: no account, no card and no email. You can run up to 10 audits an hour and 30 a day from one connection, and nothing is saved.

Does it check every page of my site?

No. It checks the homepage plus robots.txt, the sitemap and llms.txt, which is where most site-wide problems show. Inner pages can have issues of their own, such as a stray noindex, so audit the ones that matter most as well.

How is the score calculated?

Each of the 18 checks is a pass (1 point), a warning (half a point) or a fail (0). The score is the average, out of 100, and every check weighs the same.

Will a high score make AI recommend my brand?

No tool can promise that. A high score means AI assistants can read your site easily; whether they recommend you depends on what they find about you across the web, from reviews to comparisons. Placton’s plans measure that part.

Can I audit a competitor’s site?

Yes, any public website. It is a quick way to see whether a rival that AI keeps recommending does something on its site that yours does not.

Why could the audit not open my site?

The homepage has 15 seconds to answer. Some firewalls and bot protection services turn away automated visits, and the site may be offline or only reachable on a private network. If your site blocks the audit, it may be blocking AI crawlers too.

What do Placton’s paid plans add to the audit?

The audit looks at your site; the plans look at the answers. On paid plans Placton asks ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews your prompts every day (ChatGPT weekly in Venezuela and Puerto Rico) and Claude, Perplexity and Grok every week, and tracks your visibility, position, tone, sources and competitors.
