What an AI Overview tracker records

Not just whether an AI Overview exists, but what it says about you. For every search and every day, Placton keeps six things.

  • Named, and in which place

    When the AI Overview writes your brand name, that is a direct mention, with your place among the brands it lists: first, second, fourth.

  • Cited without your name

    When it links to a page of your site but never names you, Placton logs an indirect mention. Your page still shaped the answer, so it counts towards visibility.

  • The tone

    Each brand it names is marked positive, neutral or negative from the sentence where it appears. Placton is strict: a clear recommendation or a clear complaint, or it stays neutral.

  • Every source link

    All the pages the AI Overview links to, grouped by domain and marked as yours, a competitor’s or a third party’s, so you see which sites Google leans on.

  • Who else is in it

    The other brands in the same AI Overview, and a ranking against up to 25 competitors across all your searches.

  • The full text, every day

    Each AI Overview is stored in full and unedited, so you can go back and read exactly what Google wrote on a given day.

Popular choices for remote teams include Notion, monday.com and ClickUp. When you compare them, look for:

  • Shared timelines, so everyone sees deadlines across time zones.
  • Async status updates instead of daily meetings.
  • A clear owner for every task.

When Google shows no AI Overview

Google does not show an AI Overview for every search, and the same search can get one today and none tomorrow. Placton records those days as “no answer”, not as zero.

A missing AI Overview is not a rival beating you: Google simply showed its regular results. If those days counted as zero, your score would drop every time Google showed fewer AI Overviews, even if you appeared just as often inside them.

So Placton leaves them out of the average, and your Google AI visibility answers one clear question: when Google shows an AI Overview for your searches, how often are you in it? In the example, that is 12 of 20, or 60%. Counting the empty days as zeros would report 40% for exactly the same presence.

It is also why a one-off check can mislead. In the same month, a single look on day 1 found you named, on day 2 an AI Overview without you and on day 4 no AI Overview at all.

  • Google AI joins your overall visibility once it has at least 3 AI Overviews in the period, the same rule as every other AI platform.

  • A prompt that never gets an AI Overview still counts on ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Grok.

  • If a search goes weeks without one, Google may not show AI Overviews for it in your market. Keep it for the other four AIs, or swap it for another search your buyers make.

Tracking AI Overviews: how Placton reads them

The same search a buyer types, in their market, read straight from Google’s results page.

  1. Your prompt is the Google search. Placton searches Google for each prompt exactly as written and never adds your brand name, so you see the AI Overview of a buyer who has not heard of you yet.

  2. From your market. The search runs on Google’s desktop results, from the country and in the language of your workspace.

  3. The AI Overview on the results page. Placton reads the AI Overview that Google returns with the results, its full text and every link in it. In your dashboard it appears as Google AI.

What is an AI Overview tracker?

A tool that runs your customers’ searches on Google on a schedule and records whether the AI Overview at the top of the results names your brand, links to your site or leaves you out, plus the other brands and sources in it. AI Overviews change from day to day, so the trend over weeks says more than a single check.

Does Placton track Google AI Mode or Gemini?

No. Placton tracks AI Overviews, the AI summary in Google’s regular results. Google AI Mode and the Gemini app give their own answers, and Placton does not track them. Ahrefs Brand Radar, Knowatoa and SE Visible list AI Mode on the plans we checked on October 19, 2026.

How often does Placton check AI Overviews?

Every day on paid plans. During the 7-day trial, on day one and then every day while you keep visiting your dashboard. Changes and alerts arrive in a weekly email on paid plans, not in real time.

Is there a free AI Overview checker?

The 7-day free trial works as one: no card, up to 10 prompts, and on day one you see whether Google’s AI Overview names or cites you, next to the answers of ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Grok. What happens when Google shows no AI Overview?

Placton saves that day as “no answer” and leaves it out of your Google AI visibility, so the score shows how often you appear when an AI Overview is shown. The day is still listed in Searches, with a note that Google showed no AI Overview for that search.

Can I read the whole AI Overview?

Yes. Every AI Overview is stored in full and unedited, with every link it cites and the brands you follow highlighted. In Searches, filter by AI platform, prompt and period (up to the last 90 days).

Which country, language and device does it check?

The country and language of your workspace, chosen from 40 countries and 7 languages, on Google’s desktop results. A person’s own results can vary with their device, exact location and history, so read the daily trend rather than one screenshot.

Does it show clicks or traffic from AI Overviews?

No. Placton reads what AI Overviews say, not the visits they send. Google Search Console reports how often your pages appear in AI Overviews, for free.
