Generate your llms.txt from your sitemap

Type your domain. We read your homepage, your sitemap and up to 30 main pages, and write the file in the llmstxt.org format.

Free and without sign-up. We read your homepage, sitemap and up to 30 main pages.

How this llms.txt generator builds your file

It follows the format proposed at llmstxt.org (opens in a new tab): one H1, a summary in a blockquote and sections of links. No AI writes your file: every word comes from your own pages.

# Name
The site name in your Open Graph tags or your Organization markup, or the part of your page titles that repeats, such as “| Brand”.
> Summary
Your homepage meta description. Without one, the description in your Organization markup or the first real paragraph of the homepage.
## Sections
The address of each page: /features goes under Features, /pricing under Pricing, /guides under Guides and docs, /about and /contact under Company. Other folders get a section of their own, and the blog and the legal pages go under Optional.
- [Title](URL)
Your menu first, then your XML sitemap (opens in a new tab) from the top level down, up to 30 pages. Same host and language as the homepage, canonical addresses only, and no login, cart, search, tag, feed or noindex pages.
: note
The page’s own meta description. When it has none, or shares it with other pages, the first paragraph of the page.

From generated draft to live llms.txt in four steps

The draft takes seconds. The editing is where the value is, and publishing takes one upload.

  1. Generate a draft

Enter your domain in the generator above. It takes a few seconds for a small site and up to half a minute for a large one.

  2. Edit it in the box

Rewrite the summary the way you would like an assistant to describe you: what you sell, to whom and where. Add the key pages it missed, cut the ones that do not answer a customer question and give every link a note.

  3. Publish it at the root

Save the file as llms.txt in UTF-8 and upload it to the root of your site, so it opens at yourdomain.com/llms.txt as plain text. If your platform cannot host files at the root, look in its help pages for llms.txt support before you try a redirect.

  4. Check it and keep it current

Run the llms.txt checker on your domain once the file is live, and generate a new draft when you launch a product, change prices or move pages.

What a generated llms.txt cannot do for you

  • It cannot know your priorities. It ranks pages by your menu and the shape of your sitemap. You know which three pages close the most sales.

  • Its notes are only as good as your descriptions. A vague meta description becomes a vague note. Rewriting the notes is the best ten minutes you will spend on the file.

  • It writes one file per host. A blog on another subdomain, or a second language on its own domain, needs a file of its own.

  • It does not write llms-full.txt. The full-text companion file, or Markdown copies of each page, are optional and stay up to you.

There is a bigger limit too. The file is an invitation to read, not a reason to recommend. When ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude search the web, what decides whether they name you is whether their crawlers can read your pages and what other sites say about you. The AI crawler checker covers the first part.

Find out who the AIs recommend instead

Placton asks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Perplexity and Grok the questions your customers ask, and shows whether they name your brand, which competitors they put ahead of you and which pages they cite.

What the trial includes

The file helps models find your pages. The trial shows what five AI platforms answer when your customers ask.

  • 7 days free, no card. Sign up with your email or Google. When the trial ends, tracking stops and nothing is charged.

  • Up to 10 prompts. We suggest prompts and competitors from your website, and you edit the list before the first run.

  • All five AI platforms on day one. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Perplexity and Grok answer your prompts as soon as your email is confirmed.

  • ChatGPT and Google AI again every day while you keep visiting your dashboard. Claude, Perplexity and Grok are asked once, at sign-up.

  • One “Run now” and the 18-point site audit. It checks llms.txt among other points, and anyone can run it free in our GEO audit tool.

  • On paid plans only: team invites and the weekly email summary with alerts.

* On paid plans. ChatGPT is read on chatgpt.com in every country Placton tracks except Venezuela and Puerto Rico, where it is asked weekly through its API.

llms.txt generator FAQ

About Placton itself? Read the full FAQs or see every plan and price.

What is an llms.txt generator?

A tool that drafts the llms.txt file for a website: a Markdown file at the root of the site with its name, a short summary and links to its key pages, each with a note. This one builds it from your sitemap and from the titles and descriptions of your own pages.

Is the llms.txt generator free?

Yes, with no account and no email. Each connection can generate 10 files an hour and 30 a day, and neither your domain nor the file is stored: you copy or download it from this page.

Does an AI write the descriptions?

No. Every title and note comes from your own pages: their title tags, meta descriptions or first paragraphs. Nothing is invented, which also means that a page with a vague description gets a vague note until you rewrite it.

Where do I upload the llms.txt file?

To the root of your site, next to robots.txt, so it opens at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. Each subdomain is a separate site and needs its own file. Serve it as text/plain or text/markdown, in UTF-8.

Will an llms.txt file get my site cited by ChatGPT?

Nobody can promise that. Some AI companies publish llms.txt files for their developer docs, but none of the five AI platforms Placton tracks has said it reads the file when choosing which brands to name or which pages to cite.

Treat it as a cheap, tidy index of your site, and measure your visibility by what the answers say.

Why are some of my pages missing from the file?

The generator lists up to 30 main pages: your menu first, then the top levels of your sitemap. It skips login, cart, search, tag and feed pages, pages marked noindex and pages in other languages. Add any key page it missed by hand, in the same format.

My site has no sitemap. Can I still generate an llms.txt?

Yes. Without a sitemap, the generator uses the links on your homepage. A sitemap is still worth adding: search engines use it to find pages that few other pages link to.

How often should I update my llms.txt?

Whenever a key page changes: a new product, new prices, a moved or deleted page. A file that links to pages that no longer exist sends readers to dead ends.

Your llms.txt is drafted. What do the AIs say about you?

Enter your website and Placton suggests the questions your customers would ask and the competitors to watch. You edit both, and the first answers arrive the same day.
