What these tools measure
A GEO tool (generative engine optimization) measures how AI assistants talk about your brand. It sends the questions your customers ask (prompts) to ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Claude, Grok and others on a schedule, saves every answer and shows whether you were mentioned, in what position, next to which competitors and with which sources cited.
They are also called AI visibility tools or checkers, LLM visibility trackers, AI rank trackers or AEO tools, and affordable plans start at under $10 a month on credits, or $29 at a flat price. This page compares trackers only, not content writing tools, and not GEO agencies, whose retainers usually run into thousands of dollars a month.
What to look for in a GEO tool under $100/month
At this price every plan makes trade-offs. These six points decide whether one is worth it. Once you have a tool, our guide explains which GEO metrics to monitor and how to read them.
01
Which AI engines are included
Many entry plans let you pick three or four engines, or sell Claude, Gemini and AI Mode as add-ons. Check what the base price covers.
02
How often answers are refreshed
AI answers change daily. Daily data on ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews catches a drop the week it happens; weekly suits trends and the other assistants.
03
How many prompts you can track
Multiply prompts by engines and refreshes to see how many answers you get. Placton Starter’s 20 prompts add up to about 1,440 answers a month.
04
Competitor benchmarking
Visibility only means something next to your rivals: share of voice, average position and who appears when you do not.
05
Cited sources
The pages an AI cites show where to get mentioned. Look for every cited URL, labelled as yours, a rival’s or a third party’s.
06
Reports, alerts and a fair trial
Weekly summaries and drop alerts save you daily logins. Seven-day trials are the norm, but some ask for a card.

Engines sold separately. Otterly.AI Lite with Claude, Gemini and AI Mode costs $29 + $29 + $9 + $9 = $76 a month for 15 prompts.
Extra models. Peec AI Starter tracks three models; each extra one, such as Perplexity, is billed per model on top of the plan.

Credits instead of prompts. Ahrefs counts each Claude update as 8 checks; Keyword.com charges four times the credits for Claude, Perplexity and Grok.

Why Placton is our pick under $100/month
We make Placton, so weigh our view accordingly. These are the facts behind the pick:
Five AI platforms on the entry plan. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Perplexity and Grok, all included in $59 a month. No add-ons, no credits.
Daily where answers move fastest. ChatGPT and Google AI every day*; Claude, Perplexity and Grok every week. In most markets we read the ChatGPT answer a person sees on chatgpt.com rather than an API reply.
Everything you need to act. Position, tone, direct and indirect mentions, a competitor ranking and every cited URL with its owner.
Insights and alerts. Weekly recommendations and email summary, alerts when visibility drops 10 points or a rival overtakes you, and an 18-point audit of how well AI reads your site.
A trial with no strings. 7 days free, no card, up to 10 prompts. Then $59 a month ($50.17 a month billed yearly). Cancel anytime.
Priced per client for agencies. 3 client brands sharing 20 prompts cost $77 a month ($15 per brand plus $1.60 per prompt).

When another tool is a better fit
Placton is not the right answer for everyone. Pick something else if:
You need the lowest price
Otterly.AI Lite ($29) tracks 15 prompts daily on four engines; Keyword.com starts at $9.80 on credits.
You need Gemini, Google AI Mode or Copilot
Placton does not track them. LLMrefs ($79) includes all three; SE Visible ($99) covers Gemini and AI Mode; Otterly.AI Lite includes Copilot and adds AI Mode and Gemini for $9 each; Trakkr Growth includes Gemini.
You need hundreds of prompts
LLMrefs gives 500 weekly prompts on ten engines for $79; SE Visible, 200 daily prompts on five for $99.
You want every engine daily
Trakkr Growth ($100) checks 50 prompts daily on eight models, Claude and Grok included.
You already pay for Semrush or Ahrefs
Semrush’s AI Visibility Toolkit ($99 per domain) or Ahrefs’ Custom Prompts (5 to 20 daily prompts already included in paid Ahrefs plans, more from $50) keep AI data next to your SEO data.
Your budget is well above $100
Profound lists a trial and custom Enterprise pricing; Scrunch starts at $250, Goodie and AthenaHQ at $295, Gauge at $599.
How to get your business to show up in AI search
No tool can guarantee a mention: the AI decides what to write, and answers vary by person, place and day. What works is steady:
1Track the questions your customers ask an AI, not just keywords.
2Answer them clearly on pages an AI can read without running scripts.
3Get listed on the sources AI already cites: directories, reviews, media, forums.
4Keep your SEO healthy; AI answers still lean on indexed, readable pages.
5Measure weekly and compare yourself with competitors.
Keyword.com starts at $9.80 a month on credits (about 80 runs a month) and Rankscale Essentials at $17 a month billed yearly. The cheapest flat monthly plan with daily tracking is Otterly.AI Lite: $29 for 15 prompts on four engines.
Is there a free GEO tool?
Mostly trials, not free plans. Placton gives you 7 days with no card and up to 10 prompts; ZipTie, Keyword.com, Otterly.AI and Writesonic also skip the card, LLMrefs has a free account and AthenaHQ a free plan with $25 of credit (300 credits).
How much do GEO tools cost per month?
The 19 plans here cost $9.80 to $100 a month, most between $49 and $99. Scrunch ($250), Goodie ($295), AthenaHQ ($295) and Gauge ($599) start higher, and Profound lists a free trial and custom Enterprise pricing. Paying yearly usually saves 15% to 20%.
Which GEO tools under $100 track Claude and Grok?
Placton Starter ($59) includes both with no add-ons and checks them weekly. LLMrefs ($79) includes both, weekly, and Trakkr Growth ($100) checks both daily. Promptwatch includes Claude, and Rankscale lists both on credits; Otterly.AI and LLM Pulse sell Claude as an add-on; Peec AI keeps Claude and Grok for Enterprise.
How often should you check your AI visibility?
Daily for ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, whose answers change from one day to the next; weekly for the other assistants. Judge the trend over several days, never a single answer.
How accurate are GEO trackers?
They record real answers, but each one is a sample: another person, place or day can get a different reply. Read visibility scores as a trend. Reading the answer shown in the chat app itself is closer to what people see than an API reply alone.
Can a GEO tool guarantee my brand appears in ChatGPT?
No. The AI decides what to write. A good GEO tool shows where you stand, which sources the AI trusts and what competitors do better, so you can act and measure whether it worked.
Do I still need SEO if I use a GEO tool?
Yes. Google AI Overviews draw on pages Google has indexed, and ChatGPT, Perplexity and Grok search the web before answering. Readable pages that rank still feed AI answers; GEO measures how those answers mention you.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
It helps, but it is not essential. llms.txt is a proposed plain-text file that sums up your site for language models. It does not replace pages an AI can read or mentions on sources it trusts, which carry far more weight. It takes minutes to write, and Placton’s site audit checks whether you publish one.
Which GEO tool is best for a small business?
Look for your customers’ AI engines in the base price, daily data on ChatGPT and Google AI and a trial without a card. Placton Starter does that for $59 a month. For a few prompts on fewer engines, Otterly.AI Lite ($29) costs less.
On we read each vendor’s official pricing page, plus Semrush’s help center for its price (AI Visibility Toolkit) and engines (Prompt Tracking) and Otterly.AI’s help center for its trial. We noted price, prompts, engines included, refresh and trial terms; the pros, cons and verdicts weigh those published terms. Left out: Surfer and Nightwatch (no dollar prices shown to us), Hall (pricing page offline) and Mangools (prices unreadable).
