Answer engine optimization

AEO tracker

An AEO tracker checks, week after week, whether answer engines mention your brand when buyers ask about your market, in what position and next to which rivals. Placton tracks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Perplexity and Grok, and runs an 18-point AEO audit of your site. Try both free for 7 days, with no card.

How an AEO tracker follows your brand week by week

Answer engines rewrite their answers all the time, so a single check proves little. Tracking means asking the same questions on a fixed rhythm and comparing each week with the one before.

  1. Day onePlacton reads your website and suggests prompts and competitors, and you edit both before the first run. All five AI platforms answer as soon as you confirm your email.

  2. Every day*ChatGPT, read on chatgpt.com, and Google AI Overviews, taken from real Google results, answer every prompt again.

  3. Once a weekClaude, Perplexity and Grok answer the same prompts through their APIs, with live web search turned on.

  4. When the week closesOn paid plans, the weekly email compares your visibility, position, tone and competitor ranking over the last 7 days with the 7 before, and opens with an alert if something moved for real. The dashboard compares 7, 30 or 90 days at any time.

What makes one week comparable with the next

A missing answer counts as zero

If an AI leaves you out, that answer scores zero instead of being skipped, so a quiet week shows up as a drop and not as missing data.

Every AI weighs the same

Your visibility is the average of the AI platforms, each weighing the same, so ChatGPT, asked every day, does not drown out Claude, asked once a week.

Same platforms in both weeks

The weekly change only uses platforms with enough answers in both weeks, read the same way, so one thin week cannot fake a swing.

* On paid plans. ChatGPT is read on chatgpt.com in every country Placton tracks except Venezuela and Puerto Rico, where it is asked weekly through its API. The metrics themselves are explained in our guide to AI visibility metrics.

AEO tracker alerts: what the weekly email flags

Placton does not ping you every time an answer moves. Once a week, after Claude, Perplexity and Grok have answered, it emails a summary, and it opens with an alert only when a change clears a fixed bar.

Three alerts, three fixed thresholds

  • Your visibility drops. It fell 10 points or more against the previous week, compared on at least 3 AI platforms.

  • A rival overtakes you. A competitor that was level with you or behind last week is now at least 5 points ahead, on at least 3 AI platforms and in at least 2 answers.

  • A new criticism appears. An answer speaks badly of your brand where it did not the week before. On ChatGPT and Google AI, it has to repeat on 2 days or be the latest answer.

In every weekly email

Your visibility, average position and answers analyzed against the previous week, your top 3 competitors and how they moved, how many answers cite your website, the tone of the answers with a quote when one is critical, and the insight of the week.

Owners and admins get it by default and anyone can switch it off for themselves. Each workspace chooses the summary with alerts, alerts only or nothing. It is part of every paid plan and is not sent during the free trial.

AEO audit: the 18 points Placton checks on your site

The AEO audit reads your homepage, robots.txt, sitemap and llms.txt the way an AI crawler does, and tells you what to fix first. These are the four groups it checks and how the score adds up.

How the score out of 100 is built

Each point gets one of three results. The score is the share of the 18 points you earn, so a site with every point at “needs work” scores 50.

  • Pass = 1 point
  • !Needs work = half a point
  • Fail = 0 points

It takes a few seconds and works on any address, so you can audit a competitor’s site next to your own. Your recent audits stay in the dashboard to compare after each change.

The audit checks one page and three files, not every URL, and it does not read AI answers: that is the tracker’s job. What it takes to pass each point is on the free GEO audit tool page, where you can also run it without an account.

AEO audit vs AEO tracker: readiness vs results

They answer different questions, and most brands need both: the audit checks whether AI can use your site, the tracker shows whether AI actually recommends you.

A sensible order is audit first, then track. Fix anything that keeps AI crawlers out or hides your text behind JavaScript, because the answers cannot improve while those blockers stay. Then give the tracker a few weeks before you judge a change: one week of answers is too few to tell a trend from noise, as our guide on how often to measure explains.

Choosing between tools rather than learning the method? Our guide to AEO tools sorts them by the job they do.

When another tool fits better

Placton is not the right answer for everyone. Pick something else if one of these is a must. Other tools’ details come from their own websites, checked October 19, 2026 and October 24, 2026.

You need Gemini, AI Mode or Copilot

Placton does not track them. HubSpot AEO (opens in a new tab) covers ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity (daily, $50/mo, 25 prompts), and Peec AI (opens in a new tab) lets you pick 3 of ChatGPT, AI Mode, AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini and Naver AI on its Starter, Pro and Advanced plans.

You want every AI checked more often

Placton asks Claude, Perplexity and Grok once a week, and its alerts come in the weekly email, never in real time. Rankscale (opens in a new tab) sets the refresh anywhere from hourly to monthly, Claude and Grok included (Pro $99/mo, up to 4,800 answers).

You track DeepSeek or Meta AI

Placton covers five AI platforms and no more. Trakkr Growth (opens in a new tab) checks 50 prompts daily on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews, Grok, DeepSeek and Meta AI, for $100 a month (trial: 14 days, card required).

You need exports, an API or Looker Studio

Placton has none of them. Peec AI (opens in a new tab) lists CSV exports from its Starter plan, an API from Pro and a Looker Studio integration on Advanced.

You want every page of your site crawled

Placton’s AEO audit reads your homepage, robots.txt, sitemap and llms.txt, not every URL. For a page-by-page technical review, use an SEO crawler alongside it.

You want the tool to write your content

Placton gives you weekly ideas, each with the figure behind it, and the audit tells you what to fix. It does not write or publish pages for you.

AEO tracker and AEO audit questions

About Placton itself? Read the full FAQs or see every plan and price.

What is an AEO tracker?

An AEO (answer engine optimization) tracker sends the questions your buyers ask to AI answer engines on a fixed schedule and records whether your brand is named or cited, in what position, with what tone and next to which competitors. Answers change from one run to the next, so it reports how those numbers move week by week, not a single result.

What is the difference between an AEO audit and an AEO tracker?

An AEO audit looks at your website: whether AI crawlers can reach it, read it and understand who you are. An AEO tracker looks at the answers: whether AI assistants actually mention you. Placton does both, with an 18-point audit for the site and tracking on five AI platforms for the answers.

Check a single page with the free AEO checker

Which answer engines does Placton track?

ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Perplexity and Grok, all included on every plan. Google AI means the AI Overviews shown in Google results. Placton does not track Google AI Mode, the Gemini app, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI or DeepSeek.

How often does Placton check the answers?

On paid plans, ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews every day and Claude, Perplexity and Grok every week. ChatGPT is read on chatgpt.com in every country Placton tracks except Venezuela and Puerto Rico, where it is asked weekly through its API. In the free trial, all five answer on day one, then ChatGPT and Google AI keep answering daily while you keep visiting your dashboard.

What does the AEO audit check? Does it crawl my whole site?

It runs 18 checks on your homepage and three files (robots.txt, your sitemap and llms.txt): whether those files exist, whether AI crawlers are blocked, how much text is served without JavaScript, the title, description and H1, FAQ markup, JSON-LD and organization data, Open Graph tags, image alt text, HTTPS, speed, indexing, the canonical URL and the declared language.

It does not crawl every page of your site. For a page-by-page technical review, use an SEO crawler alongside it.

Is there a free AEO tracker or AEO audit?

Yes. The same 18-point audit runs free on our GEO audit tool page, with no account and no card, on your site or any other. Tracking is free for 7 days, also without a card, with up to 10 prompts and all five AI platforms on day one. After the trial there is no free tracking plan: paid plans start at $59 a month.

Run the free GEO audit tool

Will I get an alert when my AI visibility changes?

On paid plans, yes, inside the weekly email: when your visibility drops 10 points or more, when a competitor overtakes you, or when an AI answer criticizes your brand where it did not the week before. Alerts are not sent in real time, by SMS or to Slack, and the weekly email does not arrive during the free trial.

Why are my results different from what I see when I ask ChatGPT myself?

AI answers change from one run to the next, and a logged-in ChatGPT account may be shaped by your history and settings. Placton reads chatgpt.com logged out, from the country and in the language of your workspace, and stores every answer in full, so you can see exactly what was said and compare like with like over time.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

In practice they are two names for the same goal: getting AI assistants to mention and cite your brand. AEO, answer engine optimization, grew out of featured snippets and voice answers; GEO, generative engine optimization, is the newer name for AI-written answers. A tracker measures both the same way, by reading the answers.

GEO tools under $100 a month, compared

Can an AEO tracker get my brand into AI answers?

Not on its own: it measures, and no tool can make an AI recommend you. Placton shows where you stand, which sources the AI relies on and what your rivals do better, with weekly ideas and the audit’s fixes, so you can act and check in the following weeks whether it worked.

See where answer engines put your brand

Enter your website and Placton suggests the prompts and rivals to follow. Answers from all five AI platforms arrive on day one, and the 18-point audit shows what to fix on your site first.
