Free AI visibility checker

A free AI visibility checker shows whether AI assistants mention your brand when customers ask about what you sell. Placton gives you two free checks: an 18-point audit of how easily AI can read and cite your site, and a 7-day trial that asks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Perplexity and Grok your questions.

Two free checks: an AI visibility audit and a 7-day trial

One looks at your website, the other at what AI actually says about you. You get both when you sign up, free for 7 days and with no card.

Your website

The AI visibility audit: can AI read your site?

18 checks on your homepage, robots.txt, XML sitemap and llms.txt. Each one passes, needs work or fails, with what we found and how to fix it, and together they give a score out of 100.

  • AI access (5): a robots.txt file, whether GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and other AI crawlers may enter, an XML sitemap, an llms.txt file and enough text without JavaScript.

  • Content (5): a clear title, a meta description, one main heading, a FAQ section and alt text on images.

  • Structured data (3): JSON-LD, an organization profile that says who you are and Open Graph tags.

  • Technical (5): HTTPS, response time, indexing, canonical URL and declared language.

Not sure about llms.txt? Here is what it is and whether you need one.

The answers

The 7-day trial: does AI mention you?

On day one, up to 10 of your prompts go to ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Perplexity and Grok, worded the way a customer would ask. For every answer you see:

  • Whether it names your brand or only cites a page of your site

  • Your position in the answer, and its tone

  • Every source it cites: yours, a competitor’s or a third party’s

  • Which competitors it recommends instead of you

  • The full text, exactly as the AI wrote it

It all adds up to a visibility score on each AI platform and overall, calculated as shown below.

Mentions and visibility on each AI platform (example data).

How your AI visibility score is calculated

Every checker gives you a percentage. Here is exactly how Placton gets to it, with the numbers from an example first day.

  1. 1

Each answer is a yes or a no. It counts when the AI names your brand (a direct mention) or cites a page of your site without naming you (an indirect mention). An answer without you counts as zero.

  2. 2

Each AI platform gets its own percentage: the answers where you appear, divided by the answers it gave.

  3. 3

No AI Overview is not a zero. Google does not show an AI Overview for every search. When it is missing, Placton marks that search “no answer” and leaves it out, so a silent Google does not drag your score down.

  4. 4

Every AI platform weighs the same. Your score is the plain average of the five percentages. Over the week ChatGPT and Google AI collect more answers than the other three, and they still count once each.

  5. 5

Three answers before it counts. An AI platform joins the average once it has at least 3 answers.

Example: a first day with 10 prompts

Each prompt is asked once on each AI platform. Google showed an AI Overview for 7 of the 10 searches, so its percentage is out of 7.

Example of how a first-day AI visibility score is calculated from 10 prompts on five AI platforms
AI platformAnswersYou appearVisibility
ChatGPT10440%
Google AI Overviews7229%
Claude10110%
Perplexity10550%
Grok10220%
AI visibility score (average of the five)30%

Example numbers, rounded. Your dashboard shows the same figures for your brand and each competitor.

A first-day score rests on about 47 answers, so small moves from one day to the next are mostly noise (here is how many answers a real change needs). Position and tone sit next to the score, not inside it. There is no universal benchmark either: compare yourself with competitors on the same prompts, and see what counts as a good AI visibility score.

How to use the free AI visibility checker

Three steps from your website to your first answers.

  1. 1

    Enter your website

Placton reads your homepage, suggests the competitors to watch and drafts prompts your customers might ask an AI. Keep up to 10, remove any or write your own. The country and language come from your site, and you can switch to any of 40 countries and 7 languages in Settings.

  2. 2

Watch the first answers come in

Once your email is confirmed, every prompt goes to all five AI platforms, which search the web as they would for a customer. Answers appear on screen as they arrive, marked when you appear in them. ChatGPT is usually the last to arrive.

  3. 3

Read your results and audit your site

Your dashboard shows your visibility on each AI platform, every answer in full, the sources cited and where you rank against competitors. Run the 18-point audit on your site or a competitor’s. ChatGPT and Google AI are asked again each day while you keep coming back.*

* While you keep visiting your dashboard. In Venezuela and Puerto Rico, where Placton cannot read chatgpt.com, ChatGPT is asked through its API, and only on day one of the trial.

What the trial includes

Everything below is free for 7 days, with no card and no sales call.

  • 7 days free, no card. Sign up with your email or Google. When the trial ends, tracking stops and nothing is charged.

  • Up to 10 prompts. We suggest prompts and competitors from your website, and you edit the list before the first run.

  • All five AI platforms on day one. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Perplexity and Grok answer your prompts as soon as your email is confirmed.

  • ChatGPT and Google AI again every day while you keep visiting your dashboard. Claude, Perplexity and Grok are asked once, at sign-up.

  • One “Run now” and the 18-point site audit. Audit your own site or a competitor’s; each audit takes a few seconds.

  • On paid plans only: team invites and the weekly email summary with alerts.

What is not free

Tracking and new site audits after day 7. If you choose no plan, Placton stops measuring and charges nothing. Paid plans start at $59 a month for one brand, and agencies tracking several clients use the Agency plan, from $77 a month. See every plan

* On paid plans. ChatGPT is read on chatgpt.com in every country Placton tracks except Venezuela and Puerto Rico, where it is asked weekly through its API.

When another tool fits better

Placton is not the right free check for everyone. Other tools’ details come from their own websites, checked on October 19, 2026 and October 24, 2026.

You only need one answer, today

Ask ChatGPT yourself in a logged-out window, a few times, with the words a customer would use. It costs nothing. What you will not get is a trend, your competitors’ numbers or the sources behind each answer.

You want a free plan with no end date

Placton’s trial ends after 7 days. AthenaHQ (opens in a new tab) lists a free plan: 300 credits on 5 models.

You want a longer free trial

Keyword.com (opens in a new tab)’s free trial: 14 days, no card. Its AI Visibility plan then starts at $9.80 a month, on credits.

You want to test Gemini for free

Placton does not track the Gemini app. Profound (opens in a new tab)’s free trial covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews: 50 unique prompts (recommended set, not editable), daily for 7 days.

You already pay for Ahrefs

Ahrefs Brand Radar (opens in a new tab) is also free with paid Ahrefs plans (5 prompts on Lite), so start there before adding another tool.

You want to count visits from AI

Placton reads what the answers say, not the visits they send. GA4 shows sessions from AI assistants and Search Console shows AI Overview impressions, both free; see what those free reports cover.

About Placton itself? Read the full FAQs or see every plan and price.

Is this free AI visibility checker really free?

Yes, for 7 days and with no card: up to 10 prompts, all five AI platforms on day one and the 18-point site audit. After that, tracking and new audits need a paid plan, from $59 a month. There is no free plan that lasts.

See every plan and price

Do I need a credit card?

No. Sign up with your email or Google. When the trial ends, tracking stops and nothing is charged; you only pay if you choose a plan.

Why isn’t the check instant?

Because Placton asks the way your customers do. It reads ChatGPT on chatgpt.com and the AI Overview in real Google results, and asks Claude, Perplexity and Grok with live web search on. Before the first run it needs your prompts and a confirmed email.

Once your email is confirmed, the first answers appear on screen within minutes; ChatGPT is usually the last. One answer on its own says little anyway, because AI answers change from one run to the next.

Why AI answers change between runs

What does my AI visibility score mean?

It is the share of answers that name your brand or cite your site, worked out on each AI platform and then averaged so each one weighs the same. Read it next to competitors measured on the same prompts, and watch which way it moves over several days.

What counts as a good score

What is the difference between an AI visibility audit and an AI visibility check?

The audit looks at your website: whether AI crawlers can reach it, read it without JavaScript and tell who you are. The check looks at the answers: whether AI actually names or cites you. A site can pass every audit check and still be missing from answers, because AI also leans on what other sites say about you.

Does the audit check every page of my site?

No. The 18 checks cover your homepage, robots.txt, XML sitemap and llms.txt, and every check that does not pass comes with a fix. It does not crawl every page of your site or judge the quality of your content.

Free GEO audit tool

Do I get an AI visibility report?

Not as a file. Your dashboard is the report: visibility on each AI platform, every answer in full, the sources cited and where you rank against competitors, for the latest run or the last 7, 30 or 90 days. On paid plans, a weekly email sums up what changed and flags drops. There is no PDF or CSV export.

Can I check a competitor’s AI visibility?

Yes. The competitors you add are measured on the same prompts, so you see their visibility and position next to yours. You can also run the site audit on a competitor’s website.

Which AI platforms does the free check cover?

ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Perplexity and Grok, all on day one. After that, ChatGPT and Google AI are asked again every day while you keep visiting your dashboard (ChatGPT only on day one in Venezuela and Puerto Rico), and Claude, Perplexity and Grok only on day one. Placton does not track Google AI Mode, the Gemini app or Microsoft Copilot.

Can I run the free check again later?

Each person and each website get one free trial. To keep measuring after the 7 days, choose a plan: Starter tracks 20 prompts for $59 a month, and you can cancel at any time.

Which AI visibility tools are free?

Few are free for good. AthenaHQ lists a free plan with 300 credits on 5 models, and Ahrefs Brand Radar is also free with paid Ahrefs plans (5 prompts on Lite). Most others offer a free trial instead, such as Keyword.com (14 days, no card), Otterly.AI (7 days, no card) and LLMrefs (7 days; free account, no card). Placton’s trial lasts 7 days, with no card, on all five AI platforms. Other vendors’ offers as listed on their websites on October 19, 2026.
